About St George's, University of London

At St George’s, University of London, we’ve been improving health for over 250 years. As the UK’s specialist health university, we are the only UK university to share a campus with a teaching hospital, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, so you are immersed in a professional environment from day one. Our teaching is intertwined with medical and healthcare practice, and most of our lecturers are clinically active or have extensive clinical experience.

St George’s is based in the thriving, multicultural neighbourhood of Tooting in south west London. Our location offers you the best of both worlds, as Tooting is small enough to maintain a friendly, local neighbourhood atmosphere, but it is also close enough to all of the attractions of central London. You will have all the advantages of living in one of the most exciting cities in the world, without all of the cost.

Within Tooting, there are plenty of opportunities to broaden your experience and develop skills outside your learning. We value our strong links with the community and you can get involved with a range of voluntary service initiatives, including honing your first aid skills with St John Ambulance, supporting ill children through our Teddy Bear Hospital, fundraising for biomedical research and supporting blood and marrow donation campaigns.

Postgraduate study

As the UK’s specialist health university, we offer a wide array of postgraduate courses, from the exploration of global health challenges to the study of antimicrobial resistance, to provide you with the skills and experience you need to take your next step.

Our postgraduate courses are designed to meet specific career ambitions, stimulate academic and personal development while promoting critical thinking and a professional approach. St George’s is tackling today’s challenges head-on, such as the work our researchers, staff and students are currently undertaking to combat Covid-19.

Our close links with local healthcare trusts, in particular St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with which we share a campus, put us in a unique position to give our students a real taste of what their future working lives hold.

Research

Research at St George’s has three broad objectives:

  1. Generating a positive social impact by improving diagnosis and treatment of disease
  2. Preventing disease by responding to new and emerging healthcare challenges through targeted interventions
  3. Developing our understanding of health through effective collaboration.

By keeping a narrow but deep research focus, we ensure that our work is truly world class. Our research informs World Health Organization policies and transforms the lives of people around the globe. So it’s not surprising that despite our small size, we were ranked 4th in the UK for research impact in 2014.

We have three research institutes covering our broad research themes: Infection & Immunity, Population Health, and Molecular & Clinical Sciences. Each consists of a number of research groups focused on specific topics ranging from antimicrobial resistance to sudden death in the young.

Across the university, we also have crosscutting themes: Genomics & Genetics and Healthy Ageing. Similarly, our expertise in bioinformatics and statistics supports the needs of many of our research groups. And we all work together to develop clinical and scientific research careers, as well as to increase public engagement with our science.

Facilities

Students at St George’s have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art educational and research facilities as well as spaces for socialising or extra-curricular activities. Facilities include an ‘Art of Living’ suite, Clinical skills cubicles, a Dissection Room for demonstrator-led Anatomy, a Paramedic Science simulation suite, Radiography simulation suites and a Pathology Museum.

In addition to our library and laboratories, these specialised facilities ensure our students benefit from hands-on, practical learning provided in many cases by academic staff who are also practising clinicians. This means our students and researchers are well prepared and familiar with the real and practical elements of a career in science and health.

At St George’s, you will work and learn alongside people who share your passion for health and science. Our postgraduate courses are rigorous but we pride ourselves on the personal support we provide to help our students fulfil their potential. Our Graduate School supports postgraduate study by ensuring the quality of postgraduate training, supervision and education.

We also provide professional and personal development opportunities and ensure that postgraduate students and early careers researchers from different disciplines are brought together to support and learn from each other. Additionally, our Graduate Centre provides a dedicated space where postgraduate students and early career researchers can study and socialise.

As a postgraduate student you will also have access to our pastoral and practical support services which encompass careers and mentoring; counselling; disability; faith; international student support; support for students with children; and study and language skills.
