The wealth of experience gained over the past five decades has enabled us to create a diverse range of postgraduate and professional courses offering students the opportunity to train to be teachers or study education in its widest context.

With an emphasis on experiential learning, and applied and meaningful research we can ensure our trainees have the firm foundation needed to lead their field throughout their career.

Postgraduate study

The Institute is a highly regarded centre for training teachers for primary, secondary school and further education colleges. With extensive partnership arrangements with local schools and colleges, trainees benefit from the expertise and guidance of practicing teachers as well as from university tutors.

Trainee teachers develop good subject knowledge and gain a range of experiences in the classroom and other settings, giving them a wider understanding of children's learning. This preparation makes the trainees very attractive to schools and the proportion of NTU teacher trainees who find teaching employment after graduation is above the national average (NCTL data, 2012).

For those already working within education who want to gain further academic qualifications and enhance their career progression we have a range of courses that offer flexible progression routes with a variety of entry and exit points, enabling students to progress through different levels at their own pace.

Research

The Graduate School provides opportunities to study for a PhD or MPhil across a wide range of disciplines or study for the Professional Doctorate in Education. These can be studied either full or part-time and some courses can be taken via distance learning.

Research is seen as an important activity to ensure the vitality and health of academic subjects. It underpins and enriches the teaching that takes place on our undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses. Research students become part of our academic community, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge with them. They are encouraged and helped to form a mutually supportive and friendly critical community.

Facilities

Nottingham Institute of Education is based on our Clifton campus which is an attractive, self-contained greenfield site, just outside Nottingham city centre.

Following a multi-million pound investment programme, the new and improved campus is the perfect blend of peaceful spaces, and big ideas. We’ve recently added the Pavilion, a state-of-the-art sports centre, new and improved accommodation, and a number of high-spec laboratories. We’ve also invested over £5m in the Clifton Library, and refurbished The Point – Clifton’s social hub, and the home of the Students’ Union.

The campus is home to many of NTU’s sporting facilities including all-weather pitches, playing fields, indoor sports halls and fitness gym. The student village offers many dedicated services including a shop, refectory, café, bookshop, car parking and the Point bar and diner.

The Ada Byron King building is home to the Institute and is designed to provide appropriate accommodation to train primary and secondary school teachers. Several rooms are dedicated to the teaching of particular subjects – science, mathematics, computer science, art – and are fully equipped for these specialisms.

The Design and Technology department is based in the Maudslay building in the heart of Nottingham City centre. The specialist facility houses postgraduate initial teacher-training courses in Design and Technology and Engineering and gives access to the latest technology in purpose-built workshops.
